Yes, this clue was pretty darn sadistic. The audio is the song "One Week" by Barenaked Ladies. We removed the vocals and inserted DTMF tones where certain words occurred (or rather would occur, if the vocals were there). The number of the tone is an index into the letters of the word corresponding to the tone.

Ideally, if someone on your team had already memorized this song, it was "simply" a matter of figuring out what the numbers were (most cell phones play DTMF tones when you dial so this was pretty easy) and singing along with the music while someone wrote down the set of words the tones corresponded to. Many teams did not experience this ideal. For those who didn't happen to memorize the lyrics to this song before the Game, they are readily available on the Web. A more difficult approach was to go buy the Barenaked Ladies CD and play the original song back in sync. The beta team discovered they already had a copy of the song on their laptop! The variation among teams was pretty wide but surprisingly not much help was required from Game Control to get everybody through this.

Here are the lyrics with the key words marked: word (tone number = resulting letter)

It's been one week since you looked at me
Cocked your head to the side and said "I'm angry"
Five (1=F) days since you laughed at me saying
"Get that together come back and see me"
Three days since the living room
I realized it's all my fault, but couldn't tell you
Yesterday you'd forgiven me
but it'll still be two days till I say I'm sorry

Hold it now and watch the hoodwink
As I make you stop, think
You'll think you're (4=R) looking at Aquaman
I summon fish to the dish, although I like the Chalet (5=E) Swiss
I like the sushi
'cause it's never touched a frying pan
Hot like wasabe when I bust rhymes
Big like LeAnn Rimes (3=M)
Because I'm all about value
Bert Kaempfert's got the mad hits
You try to match wits, you try to hold (2=O) me but I bust through
Gonna make a break and take a fake
I'd like a stinkin (4=N) achin shake
I like vanilla, it's the finest (6=T) of the flavours
Gotta see the show (1=S), cause then you'll know
The vertigo (4=T) is gonna grow
Cause it's so dangerous,
you'll have to sign a waiver

How can I help it if I think you're funny when you're mad
Trying hard not to smile though I feel bad
I'm the kind of guy who laughs at a funeral
Can't understand what I mean?
Well, you soon will
I have a tendency to wear my mind on my sleeve
I have a history of taking off my shirt

It's been one week since you looked at me
Threw your arms in the air
and said "You're crazy"
Five days since you tackled me
I've still got the rug burns on both my knees
It's been three days since the afternoon
You realized it's not my fault
not a moment too soon
Yesterday you'd forgiven me
And now I sit back and wait til you say you're sorry

Chickity China the Chinese (5=E) chicken
You have a drumstick and your brain stops tickin'
Watchin' X-Files (1=X) with no lights on
We're dans la maison
I hope (3=P) the Smoking Man's in this one
Like Harrison Ford I'm getting frantic
Like Sting I'm tantric
Like Snickers, guaranteed to satisfy

Like Kurasawa I make mad films
Okay, I don't make films
But if I did they'd have a Samurai
Gonna get a set a' better (2=E) clubs
Gonna find the kind with tiny nubs
Just so my irons (2=R) aren't always flying off the back-swing (3=I)
Gotta get in tune (4=E) with Sailor Moon (4=N)
'Cause the cartoon (1=C) has got the boom anime (5=E) babes
That make me think the wrong thing

How can I help it if I think you're funny when you're mad
Tryin' hard not to smile though I feel bad
I'm the kind of guy who laughs at a funeral
Can't understand what I mean?
Well, you soon will
I have a tendency to wear my mind on my sleeve
I have a history of losing my shirt

It's been one week since you looked at me
Dropped your arms to your sides
and said "I'm sorry"
Five days since I laughed at you and said
"You just did just what I thought you were gonna do"
Three days since the living room
We realized we're both to blame,
but what could we do?
Yesterday you just smiled at me
Cause it'll still be two days till we say we're sorry

It'll still be two days till we say we're sorry
It'll still be two days till we say we're sorry

Answer: FREMONT ST EXPERIENCE

Here is an audio sample of the clue but with the lyrics LEFT IN PLACE along with the DTMF tones.  Some players debated the "accuracy" of the tone placement, but you can see from this recording (which we used to create the clue) that they really do hit right on.  (note this is fairly compressed and the compression makes it difficult to pick out the words along with the tones.)

Team Stories
Poor Colin B. of the Orange team.  After riding in the car on two or three long-drive golf days last summer with two of the Silver Team organizers, you'd think he'd have been ready for this clue.  Joe had decided that it would be fun to learn to sing EVERY WORD to this song, so he printed out the lyrics and he and Kristina tried hard to learn them all.  For hours, Colin sat there and listened, even held the paper in his hand.  We can't imagine how he must have felt when his team was working on this clue.   (Gee, wonder if it was anything like the way people felt during the Casino Split-Up a few hours later....)
